White House OSTP Holds Joint Commission Meeting with Australia on Science and Frontier Technologies

Aug. 12, 2020 — The Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier and U.S. Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios on Tuesday led the American delegation for the Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Science and Frontier Technologies Dialogue with Australia to further strengthen our research relationship. The Honorable Karen Andrews, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, led the Australian delegation.

The JCM included discussions and next steps in advancing partnerships in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum information science (QIS), oceans exploration and mapping, and the integrity of the international research enterprise. As part of this dialogue, the United States welcomed Australia’s National Computing Infrastructure and Pawsey Super Computing Centre to the COVID-19 High Performance Computing (HPC) Consortium. The Consortium provides COVID-19 researchers worldwide with access to the world’s most powerful HPC resources to accelerate the fight against the virus.

“Cooperation between the United States and Australia plays an important role in the advancement of science and technology. I am pleased that our meeting included robust conversations on AI, quantum, oceans, and research integrity. With this valuable dialogue in mind, we expect to see concrete outcomes that will drive innovation for both of our countries. It is critically important to the Trump Administration that our partnership to advance science, technology, and our shared values is stronger now than ever,”said Dr. Kelvin Droegemeier, White House OSTP Director.

“The United States is proud to collaborate with Australia on a range of critical emerging technology issues facing our world. Working together, we can make great strides to advance research and innovation that will benefit our collective economic prosperity and national security. We also are thrilled to welcome Australia’s National Computing Infrastructure and Pawsey Super Computing Centre to the COVID-19 High Performance Computing Consortium, the latest nation to join this worldwide effort to accelerate COVID-19 research using powerful HPCs,” said Michael Kratsios, U.S. Chief Technology Officer.

As discussed in the JCM, the United States and Australia intend to work collaboratively to:

·         Prioritize R&D that is rooted in a shared commitment to foundational scientific values and principles, and explore working together with multiple countries to improve the integrity and security of the international R&D enterprise;

·         Boost discussions between government and industry stakeholders that will inform and guide concrete steps to stronger engagement between our countries on QIS;

·         Work together, as members of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), in areas that include responsible AI, data governance, the future of work, and commercialization and innovation; and

·         Advance mapping, exploration, and ocean science in the Pacific, to support growth of sustainable ocean economy and stimulate economic recovery.

The Dialogue follows the September 2019 Leaders’ meeting between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, during which both leaders underscored the importance of science and technology cooperation
