Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is an innovation-oriented public university established in 2010, funded by Shenzhen Municipality. Widely regarded as a pioneer and innovator in moving China’s higher education forward to match the country’s ever-growing role in the international arena, SUSTech aspires to be a globally-renowned university that contributes significantly to the advancement of science and technology by excelling in interdisciplinary research, nurturing creative future leaders and creating knowledge for the world.

From its inception, SUSTech has attached enormous importance to attracting high-quality talents to its faculty. Through our continuing efforts to recruit world-class educators, SUSTech is proud to have over 1000 faculty members and staff. 90% have worked overseas, and 60% have worked or studied in a global top 100 university. Our faculty includes 44 members of national academies and 31 Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Campus Life

The SUSTech campus is situated in the rolling hills of Nanshan District in the bustling city of Shenzhen, one of the fastest growing cities in China and key component of the Greater Bay Area initiative. The natural and tranquil environment combines perfectly with the modern style of Shenzhen and its convenient location. With six residential colleges on campus, there is plenty of room for students to ponder their research or relax and enjoy their lives. 100+ student societies and clubs such as the Literature Club, Hip Hop Club, Reading Club, Sitcom Society, Guitar Club, and Calligraphy Society have already been established by SUSTech students. Through extra-curricular activities, students from different programs and disciplines interact with each other and share living and learning experiences.

Academics

With a focus on individual development through research and an international outlook, undergraduate students have the flexibility to study from a wide range of globally trained professors and lecturers from various schools on campus. SUSTech operates under the credit system, tutorial system, and residential college system. It specializes in personalization, small class sizes, and the internationalization of talent cultivation. Through a first-rate talent training system, it fosters a sound character, a solid foundation, and outstanding capabilities, with high-quality talent providing vision, social responsibility, innovative spirit and practical transferable skills. SUSTech students communicate face to face with Nobel laureates, experts and scholars, and attend frequent co-curricular seminars, lectures and forums. SUSTech strongly advocates the interaction between theory and practice and supports undergraduates’ participation in research.

Research

Since its establishment, SUSTech has built and is building 58 scientific research platforms at various levels, including one national research platform, 19 provincial and ministerial research platforms, 36 municipal research platforms, and two district-level research platforms. The Shenzhen International Research Institute of Chemistry, International Center for Mathematics and Sifakis Research Institute of Trustworthy Autonomous Systems were established as world-class laboratories with active international collaborations while the Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering is one of the ten fundamental research institutions approved by Shenzhen.

Our Rankings

As a young university celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, SUSTech has been listed in several important world rankings. Times Higher Education (THE) ranked SUSTech 8th in mainland China and 33rd in Asia in their Asia University Rankings 2020, and within the top 251-300 in the world in their 2021 World University Rankings. THE also selected SUSTech among the top 50 best young universities in the world, maintaining its position as the best young university in mainland China. The QS World University Rankings 2021 ranked SUSTech 14th in mainland China and 323rd in the world on debut. According to the latest monthly Nature Index ranking based on 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020 research output and published by the publisher of the international scientific research journal Nature, SUSTech ranks 58th in the world in terms of the weighted paper value and 17th in China.
