SDP launches tourism sector skills development project in rural provinces

The Ministry of Tourism has announced the launch of the second phase of the Skills Development Programme (SDP) – funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) – between 2020-2024 in the provinces of Kratie, Stung Treng, Preah Vihear, Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri.

The programme will focus on providing vocational training for young, low-skilled professionals across the five provinces aimed at boosting incomes and developing human resources in the tourism sector.

The launch took place on Friday at Mondulkiri Provincial Hall and was presided over by a Secretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism Pak Sokhom, deputy governor of Mondulkiri province Cheak Mengheang and director of SDP of the Swiss Confederation Christian Volker Ide.

Speaking at the launch, Sokhom said that Phase 2 of the SDP will target tourism  sector vocational education and training, especially in hospitality.

“The programme will help young men and women to develop real professional skills and contribute to human resource development within tourism. This will, in turn, allow them to access decent employment opportunities and improve their livelihoods,” he said.

He said that the northeast provinces have been experiencing a boom in tourism lately and this training should help capitalise on this surge.

Mengheang added that vocational education within the tourism sector will be key to making sure young people can enter the job market immediately after graduation or have the opportunity and skills to start small businesses.

Ide confirmed that the Skills Development Project Phase 2, 2020-2024 was made possible by a grant from the SDC.

He said that this project is set to benefit some 11,640 vulnerable young people and low-skilled staff, as well as 910 trainers, staff, managers of training institutions and private companies who will receive training and capacity building.

According to the SDC, the training courses will cover technical skills, training didactics and methodology and hospitality management, where hospitality-related business owners, managers and supervisors will have the opportunity to learn about human resources and financial management, application of the labour law and other helpful information.

The SDP is a Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation mandated project and is implemented by Swisscontact and Institute for Vocational Training, Labour Market and Social Policy in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and the Ministry of Tourism.

The programme works with the government at the national and the provincial level and with partners such as the National Employment Agency, public and non-governmental training providers as well as private companies and small enterprises in the hospitality and other sectors.

It pursues two main objectives, first is the Cambodian Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system and second is conducting initiatives, such as the SDP, to help low-skilled workers improve their technical skills, soft skills and entrepreneurship skills, boosting their employability.
