Founded in 2000, the Macau University of Science and Technology has expanded significantly, becoming the largest university in Macao and ranking Top 30 among universities in Greater China.
Faculties and Programs
The University has 11 faculties and offers a wide range of courses, including social sciences, physical sciences, law, management, business, medicine, pharmacy, tourism, art, communication, and languages.
True to its mission, the University has always fostered wide academic freedom, thus enabling the academic staff and researchers to develop diverse research projects and publish high-quality research. Over the years, the University has shown steady growth in the number of research papers published and the number of patents granted nationally and internationally. Indeed, the output of patents originating at M.U.S.T. has increased several times since its inception.
The University owns two State Key Laboratories of China, four partner research bases and joint laboratory with the key research institutes in humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education of China, a number of research institutes and research centers, and the first laboratory in Macao named after a Nobel Prize winner.
The University accommodates diversity but advocates harmony among its students. Besides promoting professional excellence as a primary goal, the University stresses whole-person development and provides a wide variety of cultural activities to actively engage students. The University also owns several modern teaching buildings and a number of teaching laboratories with advanced facilities, including a library with extensive collections in many areas.
The University has established cooperation of various forms with over 100 research institutes throughout the world. Its students are enthusiastically encouraged to enter exchange and postgraduate programs with associated universities overseas as well as to seek employment abroad.
M.U.S.T., as a young and energetic higher education institution, offers a wide range of programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and research levels and for professional learning. As of today, M.U.S.T. owns the following faculties/departments: Faculty of Information Technology, School of Business, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Chinese Medicine, Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Faculty of Medicine, University International College, School of Pharmacy and the Department of General Education, which provide a wide range of courses, including social sciences, science, law, management, business, medicine, pharmacy, tourism, art, communications and language. The University also has a School of Continuing Studies providing learning opportunities for adult in-service learners.
Facilities and Student Development
M.U.S.T. is located in a long-history city with well-mingled Chinese and Western civilizations and cultures, and is a Special Administration Region of China since 2000. The university has a beautiful campus and several modern teaching buildings, well-established laboratories and rich collections of library resources. M.U.S.T. advocates a harmonious, professional and caring campus which facilitates students to achieve all-round development and fulfill whole-person education. M.U.S.T. has set up a Mentor scheme to assist students in coping with problems in their studies and life. By holding many forms of student society activities, M.U.S.T. encourages students to actively participate in extra-curricular activities so as to develop organizational skills, critical thinking, improve social and cognitive abilities and broaden knowledge span. M.U.S.T. provides a diversity of facilities for students to engage in different kinds of extra-curricular activities, for example, the establishment of a student center with multiple piano rooms, rehearsal rooms, multi-functional rooms, and other rooms that are open for students to use for free all year round. The University Art Troupe offers students a stage to showcase their artistic talent and won widely recognition. The Center for Entrepreneurship and Career Planning helps students find their personal strengths and expertise to excavate their own potential for career development. The Student Affairs Office, faculties and departments organize visits, field trips and community activities for students. The University also encourages students to participate actively in various professional competitions locally and abroad, with remarkable achievements.
At present, M.U.S.T. has established multiple forms of partnerships with hundreds of institutions all over the world in educational programs, academic research, personnel training, student exchanges and other areas. Students are encouraged to engage in overseas exchange programs and has made available of funding for outstanding students to study abroad. It also gives support to students to pursue further overseas studies or overseas employment in various ways, including helping students to seek further studies abroad through recommendations and collaborating partnership, etc.
The employability and the opportunity to further studies of M.U.S.T. graduates prove to be highly satisfying. A large portion of its graduates have received admission offers and scholarships from world renowned universities to continue graduate studies abroad, and an even greater number of graduates have taken up employment in government departments, NGOs and well-known enterprises in Macao, Hong Kong and Mainland China.

M.U.S.T. fosters a student-centered learning culture, particularly in its planning and establishing centers of experiential learning, service learning, English and Chinese language support, and Learning Commons. Our Educational Development Center (EDC) provides resources – material, human and intellectual, research-informed – giving a clear, high profile to teaching, learning, research, supervision, administrative training and development. The Centre provides on-the-ground support and development for these areas of its work, for staff and students, such as training sessions of Outcome-based Approach in Teaching for faculties.
M.U.S.T. values aligning institutional commitment to continuous quality improvement, accountability and public recognition through institutional and program accreditation from internationally recognized accreditation agencies, for example, the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) in UK.
Quality Teaching Team
The key to excellent education and extraordinary research is to have a knowledgeable, professional, experienced and internationalized faculty team. M.U.S.T. has hundreds of chair professors, professors, distinguished professors, associate professors and assistant professors. The majority of the academic and research staff have obtained PhD degrees and have either studied or worked in world-renowned institutions and universities. In addition, M.U.S.T. has invited a group of world-class specialists and experts to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses. These specialists include academicians such as Highly Cited scholars and high ranking professors from top universities and institutions in the US, Europe, Australia, Mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan adn Hong Kong. By teaching courses and supervising graduates, these outstanding scholars impart newest knowledge, disseminate latest research findings, and introduce students to international horizons and diverse cultures.
