Amazon looks to fill 100 jobs in Chattanooga, Charleston

This story was updated on Sept. 8, 2020 at 4:25 p.m. with more information.

Online retailer Amazon has more than 100 open posts at its Chattanooga and Charleston, Tennessee, distribution centers which officials hope to fill next week at a virtual hiring event.

Across Tennessee, the company has more than 1,100 open corporate and tech jobs, the company said on Wednesday.

The Southeast Tennessee jobs at Amazon are not part of peak holiday season hiring, said a company spokeswoman.

Amazon will host Career Day 2020 on Sept. 16. Registration is open and job seekers can find more information, including how to sign up for a career coaching session, at amazon.jobs/careerday, according to the company.

As part of the nationwide virtual event, Amazon will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the 33,000 corporate and tech jobs currently available at the company with thousands of additional hourly positions across the company’s operations network to be announced soon, the online retail giant said. Amazon said the 33,00 currently available jobs is the largest number of job openings it’s had at one time.

Of the total available jobs, 1,128 are in Tennessee and 527 in Nashville, according to Amazon.

The jobs come with a minimum wage of $15 per hour, health insurance, up to 20 weeks of parental leave, and company-funded “upskilling opportunities,” the retailer said.

In June, officials at Amazon’s Chattanooga site said it had doubled its workforce to over 3,000 employees from its headcount in January, and it was still hiring to meet customers’ growing demand for goods amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Amazon spokesman Owen Torres said in March that Amazon would hire more than 175,000 temporary full- and part-time workers across its North American operations. It later said it would provide the opportunity for 125,000 of those to stay with the company.

The Career Day event includes three hours of programming that will feature so-called fireside chats, panel discussions, and interviews with leading career advice experts and Amazon executives.

According to a study commissioned by Amazon, some 54% of job seekers in Nashville currently looking for a new job have been forced to look for a new job because of the impact of the coronavirus.

Amazon chose Nashville for its new logistics hub nearly two years ago when it selected Northern Virginia as the site of its second headquarters, known as HQ2.

As part of its nationwide search, Amazon originally planned to split its second headquarters between Arlington, Virginia, and New York City’s Long Island City neighborhood in Queens. It later withdrew its proposal in New York due to pushback from local activists and city council leaders.

Since 2010, Amazon has created more than 12,000 jobs in Tennessee.
