MORRIS, N.Y. – A former employee at the Morris Central School District is accused of diverting and stealing more than $22,000 in federal school funding.
The district’s former treasurer, 47-year-old Kristina Hand, of Morris, was arrested on Thursday and charged with federal program theft, for allegedly stealing checks that were made payable to the school district from 2018-19. The district received more than $10,000 in federal funding both years.
According to the Department of Justice, Hand was terminated in February of 2020, after school officials discovered the alleged theft.
Hand was in court Thursday, where she was released to appear at a later date.
She is facing up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.
This case is being investigated by the FBI, New York State Police, and the Office of the New York State Comptroller, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Barnett.
