There were three messages in the confusing jobs data for August that emerged yesterday from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The headline number was dramatically better than any economist, or even the Reserve Bank, or Treasury, had predicted.

The first is, despite the claims from the media and the Morrison government that the Andrews government’s lockdown was some profound act of economic vandalism, Victoria’s jobless rate only moved up to 7.1%, from 6.8%, with 42,000 jobs lost in that state last month. Hours fell by 4.8% in Victoria, compared with a 1.8% rise across the rest of Australia.

Now there may well be another big fall in Victoria in the September data as the numbers catch up. There will be a clue in the ABS’s next payroll jobs and wages data next week.

But nationally, the jobs market is proving resilient and showing the

This Is the Number 1 Sign of High Intelligence, According to Steve Jobs

School smart and real-world smart are, as we all know, not the same thing. It’s perfectly possible to ace every test in college and struggle in life after you graduate. So if academic grades aren’t enough to prove a person is smart, how do the world’s most successful people spot the truly, practically intelligent?

Jeff Bezos looks for the ability to change your mind frequently. Elon Musk is all about examining skills over credentials. Steve Jobs, however, took another approach.

The legendary Apple co-founder laid out how he defines real intelligence in a talk to the Academy of Achievement way back in 1982 (hat tip to Alan Trapulionis). According to Jobs, the key to being truly smart isn’t deep expertise in one field, but instead the ability to make unexpected connections between fields.

Breadth beats depth.

“A lot of [what it means to be smart] is the ability to zoom

More Americans Are Quitting Their Jobs. That’s a Good Sign

(Bloomberg) — The number of U.S. workers who voluntarily left their jobs in July increased to a five-month high, indicating more Americans are becoming sanguine about their prospects of finding a new position as the economy recovers.

So-called quits climbed by 344,000 to nearly 3 million during the month, Labor Department figures showed Wednesday. The number of job leavers as a share of total employed rose to 2.1%, creeping closer to the 2.3% that was prevalent before the coronavirus shut down the economy.

The government’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey also showed a larger-than-forecast 6.6 million vacant positions at employers, about 400,000 shy of pre-pandemic levels. Layoffs also declined in July from a month earlier.

Taken together, it “all adds to the fact that the quits rate is probably realistic,” said Steven Ricchiuto, U.S. chief economist at Mizuho Securities USA LLC. “Can I say the number is definitely the
