Sales rise for VR Education’s remote learning tools

Virtual learning company VR Education has reported strong sales growth driven by its flagship online platform, Engage.

The Waterford-based firm said revenue in the first six months of 2020 reached €681,000. That is 37pc higher than a year ago.

Chief executive David Whelan said the world’s adoption of remote working amid the Covid-19 pandemic has proved “transformational for VR Education”. He described the firm’s outlook as “brighter than ever – in stark contrast to the difficulties many corporates are experiencing with restrictions and shutdowns”.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) registered a loss of €0.9m, the same as in 2019.

But analysts said VR Education is well positioned for strong second-half sales, particularly for Engage.

That online virtual learning and corporate training platform generated 33pc of sales in the first half of 2020, up from 18pc a year ago.

South Dakota-based Daktronics is cutting about 100 jobs as the company anticipates financial setbacks created by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a Friday statement from the company.

The Brookings-based maker of electronic displays and billboards reported its net sales, net income and cash generated by operations for the quarter were all down millions of dollars year-over-year, according to financials released last week.

Daktronics was able to remain profitable in the short-term, but that was with temporary measures, spokeswoman Staci Mergenthal said in an emailed statement.

“We now foresee a more prolonged downturn and we felt a longer-term solution was necessary,” Mergenthal said.

Financial strain hasn’t stopped Daktronics from landing some sizable contracts, including installing a suite of video displays on a Major League Soccer stadium planned for Austin, Texas.

Sales tax revenue may save Blount County Schools from losing state funding | News

Sales tax revenue coming in higher than projected this spring may save Blount County Schools from losing nearly $5 million a month in state funding starting in October.

BCS plans to ask the County Commission to approve a change this month to the general purpose school budget that wouldn’t alter the amount the district spends but would change the source of money.

The district planned to use more than $1 million from its undesignated fund balance for costs related to COVID-19. The budget amendment would rely on $580,000 of that coming from an increased sales tax revenue estimate instead.

Local funding rule

Without that infusion of area revenue, BCS would fail a “maintenance of effort” (MOE) requirement from the state, which is designed to keep local governments from cutting education spending.
