Missouri Job Center to offer IT and web development classes | KOLR

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Missouri Job Center announced Friday it will be offering IT and web development classes for free to those who meet eligibility guidelines.

According to a press release, the job center can do this with the help of The Geek Foundation. Classes will meet two nights per week and are tailored to adults wanting to change careers and get into the field of Information Technology and Web Development.

Below are the two tech classes offered:

  • Develop Yourself IT Class is a 24-week class that prepares students to take the CompTIA A+ exam and equips students with skill sets needed for entry-level IT job opportunities
  • Develop Yourself Full-Stack Web Development Class is 20 weeks and trains in JavaScript, Java, and the foundational programming concepts needed for Front-End and Full-Stack Web Developer careers

Both classes begin on October 27th and will be offered at multiple locations, the job center says.

ReSkill MS helping Mississippians get job skills training through CARES ACT funds

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A program passed by the state legislature in July is now helping Mississippians receive career-training.

ReSkill Mississippi is a program funded by CARES ACT money appropriated through Mississippi House Bill 1795 that helps people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic get career training for high-demand jobs through non-credit courses in state community colleges.

“The ReSkill MS program is designed to connect Mississippians with training opportunities that lead to jobs now, that lead to career pathways and to help get them into those in demand careers that are still hiring despite the COVID pandemic,” said Rebecca Brown, dean of Workforce and Community Development at Pearl River Community College.

Few new hires have the skills needed for the job, survey shows

  • Only 16% of new hires possess the skills needed for their current jobs and the jobs of the future, according to Gartner analysis released September 10. “Existing roles may require up to 10 new skills by 2021,” the organization noted.
  • Traditional talent acquisition sources may not enable employers to find these new skills in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gartner said, potentially leading employers to prioritize skills over “candidate profiles” that may miss out on workers that are largely self-taught. “Traditional recruiting methods are unable to compete with the large-scale shifts to the workplace and the labor market,” Lauren Smith, vice president in the Gartner HR practice, said a press release.
  • To find the right skills in the market, companies may need to consider how to broaden their candidate search criteria and also focus on internal development of employees, potentially through “accelerated training programs.”

United Airlines announces biggest pilot job cut in its history

CHICAGO (Reuters) – United Airlines UAL.O is preparing for the biggest pilot furloughs of its history after announcing on Thursday the need to cut 2,850 pilot jobs this year, or about 21% of the total, without further U.S. government aid.

Airlines, reeling from the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic on air travel, have asked the U.S. government for another $25 billion to cover employee payroll through March.

The first tranche, which banned any job cuts until Oct. 1, expires at the end of September, but talks in Washington have stalled as Congress has struggled to reach agreement on a broader coronavirus assistance package.

United’s planned cuts, released in a memo to employees and shared with the media, would run between Oct. 1 and Nov. 30. They are significantly higher than the 1,900 announced earlier this week by Delta Air Lines DAL.N and 1,600 by American Airlines AAL.O.
